Delegate Hixson Honored As Champion of Families
Congratulations to Maryland State Delegate Sheila E. Hixson (District 20, Montgomery County), the 2015 recipient of Maryland Family Network’s Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick Leadership Award in Early Care and Education. During her distinguished career, including more than two decades as Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, Delegate Hixson has become one of the General Assembly’s most vigorous and effective champions for young children, working families, and early childhood education.
The award was presented before a packed house at the newly opened Silver Spring Library and featured remarks from Fran Ware, Montgomery County Public Libraries; N. Scott Phillips, past Board Chair, Maryland Family Network; Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, past Maryland State Superintendent of Schools; and Delegate Sheila Hixson.
“As Delegate Hixson knows so well, early childhood education issues are multi-dimensional and inter-connected, and they extend far beyond what we think of as a preschool classroom,” Dr. Grasmick said in her introduction of Delegate Hixson. “We can’t promote education without boosting families, and that’s why Delegate Hixson’s steadfast support for home visiting, Family Support Centers, and Child Care Resource Centers has been so vital to Maryland’s school readiness gains.”
The Grasmick Leadership Award has been given annually since 2011 in recognition of a Marylander with an outstanding record of accomplishments that exemplify a commitment to young children, their families, their teachers, and care providers that Dr. Nancy Grasmick embodied throughout her career. Past recipients have been Congressman Steny Hoyer, Senator Barbara Mikulski, and Maryland State Senators Nancy King and Richard Madaleno.
